Drama and excitement continues in the English Premier League as teams try to finish the season on a good note battering for maximum points.
EVERTON VS BURNLEY
On Friday, Everton played against Burnely at Goodson Park and won the game by 2-0 thanks to B. Mee in the 17th minute before S. Coleman doubled the lead 3 minutes later.
For Everton , the Senegalese Idrissa Gueye was delightful to watch as he continued to display a top class performance. The midfielder helped his team in covering the defenders and seems to have improved on his ability to play with the ball at his feet and didn’t lose possession and his energy was something Burnely failed to deal with.
CARDIFF CITY VS CRYSTAL PALACE
At the Cardiff City Stadium, Crystal Palace ended Cardiff City’s hopes of surviving in the EPL as a 3-2 loss meant they return to the championship.
Crystal Palace scored through Wilfed Zaha, Andros Townsend and Mitchy Batshuayi. Unfortunately Kelly’s goal and Reid’s strike from the was not enough to rescue the situation for Cardiff City.
For Cardiff City, the Gabonese defender Bruno Manga, had a tough afternoon as him together with his team said good bye to action in the EPL but playing in central defence, Manga was solid through out the game and made crucial blocks for Crystal Palace not to score more goals.
For Crystal Palace, the Ivory Coast international Wilfred Zaha and the Ghanaian Jordan Ayew were in the starting line up while the Senegalese Cheikhou Kouyate was on the bench.
The Ivorian Wilfred Zaha had a good game. He was behind every single attacking move Crystal Palace had. He later then spiced up his performance with a wonderful goal in the 28th minute for his team to take the lead.
The Ghanaian Jordan Ayew, showed signs of lacking confidence after missing action for a long time but could position himself well to create spaces for his team mates.
The Senegalese Cheikhou Kouyate was introduced in the second half and did a good job to solidify the midfield making it difficult for Cardiff City players to create goal scoring opportunities from the center of the park.
The loss means Cardiff City have 31points from 37 games 5 less of 17th placed team Brighton and Holve Albion, of which if they can still win the last game they can’t reach 36 points.
NEWCASTLE UNITED VS LIVERPOOL
At the American Express Stadium, Liverpool took their time collecting maximum points thanks to an 86th minute header from Origi to cement the chances of winning the league this year.
The Reds were the first to score through Virgil Van Dijk in the 13th minute before Christian Atsu leveled matters for Newcastle United seven minutes later.
In the 28th minute, Mohammed Salah scored for Liverpool before Jordan Rondon equalised for the home team.
With four minutes to end the game, Origi scored the all important goal that gave Jurgen Kloop’s side all the three points.
For Newcastle United coach Rafael Benitez gave the Ghanaian Christian Atsu a place in the starting team and did not disappoint as he was full of life on the left hand side of his teams attack and pressurised Liverpool’s defender Alexander Arnold, no wonder he scored a goal in the match.
The Senegalese Mohammed Diame was unused substitute for Newcastle United.
For Liverpool, the Senegalese Sadie Mane had a frustrating day in office as he failed to score a goal in a match he squandered a lot of clear chance.
The Egyptian Mohammad Salah, continued from where he stopped on Tuesday in the champions league match against Barcelona. His runs and passes on the right hand side gave pressure to Newcastle United defenders and saw himself scoring in the 28th minute before being stretchered off in the second half after a nasty clash with Newcastle United goalkeeper Dubravka.
The Guinean Naby Keita who has been in form for Liverpool in the past three games, was not part of the team due to injury.
BOURNMOUTH VS TOTTENHAM HOTSPURS
Another bad day in office for Mauricio Pochettino and his men as they lost 1-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in a game Tottenham Hotspur finished with nine players as Son Heung-Min and Foyth were given matching orders.
For Tottenham Hotspur, the Kenyan Victor Wanyama started in midfield and played very well before switching into central defence after Foyth was shown a red card in the second half. Wanyama failed to keep an eye on Bournemouth’s Ake who headed home a ball from a corner kick that handed his team all the points.
The Ivory Coast defender Sergio Aurier was not part of the team for the day.
The loss has made Tottenham Hotspur to drop to fourth position as they have 70 points , one less than those of third placed Chealse.
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN VS MANCHESTER UNITED
Manchester United failed to force a top four finish after they drew 1-1 against Huddersfield Town at The John Smith’s Stadium.
Scott McTominary gave the visitors the lead in the 8th minute before Mbeza equalised for Huddersfield Town in a match the Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly was not part of Manchester United on the day as he is nursing a knee injury.
The draw means Manchester United will play in the Europa league next season.
ARSENAL VS BRIGHTON AND HOLVE ALBION
At the Emirest Stadium, the Gunners failed to collect three points as they were forced to a 1-1 draw by Brighton and Holve Albion.
The Gabon international Pierre Emerick Aubameyang put Arsenal in front after scoring from the penalty spot in the 9th minute before Murray equalised in the 61st minute from a penalty as well.
For Arsenal, coach Unai Emery gave the Gabonese Pierre Emerick Aubameyang a place in the starting line up. Aubameyang was a threat to Brighton defence with his pace and quick feet and was composed to score from the penalty spot.
The Nigerian Alexi Iwobi, introduced in the 76th minute failed to make an impact in the game as Brighton players gave him no chance to play with the ball while the Egyptian Mohamed Elneny was unused substitute.
CHELSEA VS WATFORD
Watford suffered a 3-0 defeat in the hands of Chealse at the Stamford Bridge with goals from Reuben Loftus -Cheek, David Luiz and Gonzalo Higuain to secure a top four finish.
For Watford, the Nigerian Isaac Success who was introduced in the second half failed to change the game for his side as he was introduced at a time Chealse was in control of the match.
With the win Chealse have moved to position three with 71 points from 37 games.
MANCHESTER CITY VS LEICESTER CITY
Manchester City knew dropping points will give Liverpool high hopes of winning the trophy this year but we will have to wait until the last remaining game as Manchester City defeated Leicester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to a 30 yards strike from captain Vincent Kompany in the 70th minute to go top of the English Premier League with each team having played 37 games.
Coach for Manchester City Pep Guardiola did not give game time to the Algerian Riyad Mahrez but on a night they returned to the top of the EPL that was not a thing to work about.
For Leicester City, the Nigerian Wilfred Ndidi was in the starting line up and as a defending midfielder he was instrumental in making sure that Manchester City’s attacking moves from the center of the park be interrupted . Ndidi seem to be a hub of Leicester City as he anchored well his defenders and was able and quick to release his teammates into attacking positions but with his kind of performance, he was unlucky to be on the losing side.
The Nigerian Nkelechi Iheanacho was introduced in the second half of the match with ten minutes to go but missed a very good scoring opportunity towards the end as he shot went wide of Manchester City’s goal .
The three points Manchester City collected takes them to the top of the English Premier League with 95 points one more of second placed Liverpool and with each team remaining with one game to end the season the title will be decided on the last day of action.
