English Premier League (EPL) teams were back on the field of play on match day 28 on Tuesday 26th February and Wednesday 27th February 2019 to battle for 3 points and as usual African players were not spared to make a mark for their teams.
On Tuesday 26 February 2019, Newcastle United played against Burnley in a game the Senegalese Mohamed Diame only got 7 minutes to play for and did manage to kill the temple of the game while Ghanaian Christian Atsu was unused substitute in a game Newcastle United won by 2 goals to 0.
The same Tuesday night saw Nigerian Wilfred Ndidi starting in midfield for Leicester City while his country men Kelechi Ihenacho being on the bench as Leicester City welcomed Brighton and Hove Albion at the King Power Stadium.
The Nigerian Ndidi managed to control and dominate affairs for Leicester City in the middle of the pack as he protected his back four well while the Nigerian Ihenacho did not have much to show off as he was introduced in added time of the game Leicester City won by 2 goals to 1.
The Senegalese Idrissa Gueye also started for his team Everton on Tuesday night. Gueye had a good game on the night as he had a solid display in midfield partnering well with Morgan Schneiderlin and Gueye was able to bring balls into attacking positions for Everton and no wonder he managed to set up Calvert Lewin for his team third goal on a night Everton defeated Morgan Schneiderlin by 3 goals to 0.
The battle for three points continued on Wednesday 27th February 2019 .On the night, Chelsea invited Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge in a match African players, the Kenyan Victor Wanyama and the Ivorian Sergio Aurier were unused substitutes for their team Tottenham Hotspurs which lost to Chelsea by 2 goals to 0.
Wednesday night also saw the Ivorian Wilfred Zaha staring for his Crystal Palace and the Senegalese Cheikhou Kouyate being on the bench for Palace with the Ivorian Eric Bailly starting on the bench for his team Manchester United.
In the match, the Ivorian Zaha managed to produce brilliant skills to invade Manchester United players but his pace and runs did not trouble united much as Ashley Young managed to keep an eye on him. His team mate the Senegalese Kouyate did not have much time to make an impact as he was introduced in the 82nd minute with Manchester United enjoying much of possession.
The Ivorian Eric Bailly for Manchester United was introduced in the 77th minute replacing Diogo Dalot and had a good game as he helped united solidify their defence to make sure three points was in the bag on the night.
The pair of African stars at Liverpool, the Senegalese Sadio Mane and the Egyptian Mohammad Sarah were part of Liverpool’s starting front three on a night the Senegalese Naby Keita started on the bench.
The Senegalese Mane was impressive in the Central forward role where he managed to score 2 goals for his side and the Egyptian Mohammad Sarah had a good game to his new as well as he managed to do a good job for Liverpool on the right hand side. With his pace and dribbling skills he easily eliminated his opponents and was hungry for a goal as he kept shooting on goal with Watford goalkeeper, Foster keeping him at bay and his efforts paid off when he set an assist for Mane to score Liverpool’s 2nd goal of the night.
The Senegalese Naby Keita did not have much to show as he was introduced in the 84th minute with the damage already done to Watford as Liverpool won the game by 5 goals to 1.
The Algerian Riyad Mahrez was thrown into the starting line up of Manchester city by coach Pep Guardiola. Mahrez did not have a good as he struggled as he lacked confidence since it has been long since he started a match for Manchester City and that affected his decision making no wonder he was replacing the 55th minute in a game Manchester City defeated West Ham bus Sergio Aguero lone goal.
Issa Diop, the Senegalese, was fantastic for his side west ham united despite losing to Manchester City. Diop managed to clear everything that came his way and effectively gave no space to Sergio Aguero.
In another match on the night the Gabonese Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was in the starting line up for Arsenal having started on the bench in Arsenal’s weekend game against Southampton while the Nigerian Alex Iwobi and the Egyptian Mohamed Elneny being on the bench..
The Gabonese Aubameyang failed to really sparkle in the match and only came into life when he raced onto a Mkhitaryan’s through ball to score Arsenals 4th goal of the night.
The Nigerian Alex Iwobi was introduced in the second half of the game and his introduction brought some energy to his side as he always wanted the ball and was involved a lot while the Egyptian Mohamed Elneny was unused substitute as three points was collected by Arsenal who defeated Bournemouth by 5 goals to 1.
